Smart Start offers you a free opportunity to learn about academic study and improve your academic writing before lectures start.

It also offers you an opportunity to meet other new university students.

Topics to get you started include:

  • Academic expectations
  • Reading
  • Notetaking skills
  • Essay writing

These interactive sessions are designed to build your confidence and give you a head start with your studies at Victoria.

The Student Learning | Te Taiako team is a group of professional, experienced learning advisers who specialise in helping you achieve academic success. Staff work with all students, from first-year to postgraduate level, and cover all forms of academic writing, study management skills and maths.

Student Learning | Te Taiako offers:

  • free academic skills workshops and specialist programmes all year
  • online resources at victoria.ac.nz/studyhub
  • individual 50-minute appointments to assist your study,
  • academic writing and maths and statistics
  • 15-minute express appointments with a learning adviser at Victoria Info Ihonui, Level 2 Library entrance, the Hub, 10am–2pm, Monday to Friday
  • a Māori Learning adviser to support Māori students in their studies
  • a Pasifika learning adviser to support Pasifika students in their studies.
