FYSEC 2017 In-Person

First Year Science Educators Colloquium

Thursday 23rd - Friday 24th November 2017 | Victoria University of Wellington’s Kelburn Campus

Instructors of first-year university science subjects face unique sets of challenges. For example, they often work with extremely large classes that have a bewildering diversity of aptitude and previous experience in science. Many instructors teach ‘service’ courses in subjects for which students often show little interest but are taking as requirements for other majors. Equally, many students are inadequately prepared for the transition to tertiary level science, and they struggle to understand and adapt to the University systems for instruction and assessment. Completion rates and academic grades are often lower for Māori and Pasifika students than for other ethnicities, and women are underrepresented in many science courses.

Since 2010, biology instructors from Universities across New Zealand have met annually to attend FYBEC, the First Year Biology Educators Colloquium, to deliberate these issues. FYBEC presented a unique opportunity for lecturers and tutors from different Universities to share openly the problems they face and their strategies for improvement. It also became a venue to discuss international trends in science pedagogy, including educational technologies and new types of learning spaces.

To accommodate the growing popularity of FYBEC, the participants at the 2016 colloquium in Dunedin voted to expand its membership to first-year educators in all tertiary science disciplines. Renamed as FYSEC, it was decided that Victoria University and Massey University collectively host the inaugural meeting in Wellington in 2017.
