Designing Accessible Courses in Blackboard In-Person

When we design for accessibility, it results in a course that provides a better online experience for all students – not just those who identify as having a disability. This session, which will be delivered in partnership with Disability Services, will guide you through eight steps you can take to improve the accessibility of your Blackboard course. By following these steps, you’ll help to create an inclusive online environment that will meet the learning needs of a wide variety of students.

The steps we’ll discuss are:

  1. Have a consistent and logical layout with descriptive headings and subheadings

  1. Give clear, succinct instructions that say what to do and why

  1. Use only a few colours, which have high enough contrast between them

  1. Add meaningful descriptions to images and graphs

  1. Use descriptive hyperlinks

  1. Use easily readable fonts in a readable size

  1. Create accessible powerpoints, word documents and PDFs

  1. Incorporate captions where possible

In the session we’ll show examples of how to achieve each of these steps within Blackboard. There will also be an opportunity for questions and discussion at the end of the session.
