FGR Supervision Workshop: Cross-cultural supervision In-Person
Are you keen to enhance your skills in working with postgraduate students from cultures other than your own? This workshop offers the opportunity to explore your own expectations and assumptions, and consider how these might differ from those of students whom you supervise. By framing the session within the university’s core values of rangatiratanga (leadership), manaakitanga (the generous fostering of knowledge), kaitiakitanga (responsibility for, and guardianship of, knowledge), whai mātauranga (intellectual curiosity), whanaungatanga (collaboration and collectiveness) and akoranga (collective responsibility for learning), we aim to support supervisors in establishing mutually respectful relationships with their students. During the workshop you will be invited to:
- consider areas of potential cross-cultural difference in the supervision relationship
- discuss supervision-related scenarios which reflect different types of miscommunication
- identify strategies for enhancing cross-cultural awareness and reducing the likelihood of misunderstandings in supervision work.
