FGR "Orientation to PGR Supervision" In-Person

Orientation sessions are designed for staff who are new to supervision and experienced supervisors who are new to Victoria University of Wellington. External supervisors are also welcome to attend an orientation supervision.

Objective: To provide new and experienced supervisors new to VUW with a general understanding of the principles of doctoral supervision at VUW

Topics covered include:

  • Doctoral admissions (what should you look for)
  • Key elements of effective supervision
  • Administrative processes for supporting students (including how to help with challenges that are outside your control)
  • Progressing from Provisional to Full Registration (for PhD candidates)
  • Case studies of challenging supervision situations

While focussing on doctoral processes, the material can be easily applied also to masters supervision. Completing the Orientation is a minimum requirement for all supervisors at Victoria.
