FGR "The Oral Defence: Notes for Supervisors" In-Person

This workshop is an informal briefing for supervisors whose doctoral students are approaching their oral exam. It is designed for supervisors who have never had a student go through an oral before and for experienced supervisors who have come from elsewhere and would like to understand the process at Victoria University of Wellington. We will take you through an accelerated version of the workshop that is offered to students and will answer your questions. 

Objective:

  • To provide an overview of the oral examination process at VUW
  • To cover tips and tricks to help supervisors prepare their students for the oral exam

The session comprises a brief presentation followed by a group discussion. Topics covered include:

1. Understanding the Doctoral examination process at VUW

  • Approaching submission
  • Sumitting
  • The Oral Defence
  • Outcomes of the Oral
  • What happens afterward

2. Tips/tricks: How to help your students ace their doctoral exam
