FGR "Doctoral supervision: The first months" In-Person

A session available for academic staff to help encourage quality supervision of doctoral students.

Objective: To explore a range of strategies to support students in the first months of their PhD.

The session comprises a brief presentation followed by a group discussion. Topics covered include:

  • How to help new students settle in
  • The 'workplace'
  • First research tasks to be completed
  • How to support PhD planning
  • Training Needs Assessment for Doctoral students (tools, tips, etc.)

Venue: KK 203 (Kelburn campus)

About the facilitator:

  • Martha Savage is Professor of Geophysics at Victoria University of Wellington. Professor Savage became a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in 2011 and became the first New Zealand female to be a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 2015. She supervises a number of PhD and MSc students, with whom she often co-authors papers
