FGR "Your own practice" In-Person
A session available for academic staff to help encourage quality supervision of research students.
Objective:
- To deepen supervisors’ understanding of supervision as a skill that needs to be nurtured
- To provide supervisors with self-assessment tools
The session comprises a brief presentation followed by a group discussion. Topics covered include:
- Key supervisory skills
- Strategies to enhance supervisory skills (facilitate your own professional development)
- Evaluating your own supervision practice: Why, what, and How (Self-assessment form)

About the facilitator:
Dr Kate Thornton: Her research areas include educational leadership and leadership development across a range of sectors; mentoring and coaching, and professional learning communities. She has worked at Victoria University of Wellington since 2004; she is a former secondary school teacher and professional development facilitator. She is also a former Head of School and am currently acting as advisor on the leadership and development programme for Heads of School here at the university. Kate teaches in post-graduate programmes including the Master of Education and the Masters of Secondary School Leadership as well as supervising both Master's and PhD thesis students working on leadership related topics
