POSTPONED_FGR "Doctoral supervision as a pedagogical encounter" In-Person

A session available for academic staff to help encourage quality supervision of research students.

Objective: To offer an understanding of the supervisor’s pedagogical role (doctoral supervision as a pedagogical practice)

The session comprises a brief presentation followed by a group discussion. Topics covered include:

  1. What does doctoral pedagogy involve?
  2. Key pedagogical principles and strategies for research supervision
  3. Academic integrity and supervision: What is your role in shaping your students’ perceptions of academic integrity? 

Group/individual work 

  • What motivates you?
  • What are the principles of your supervision practice?
  • What does a PhD thesis represent?

About the faciliators:

Stella McIntosh - Principal Adviser, Academic Integrity, Academic Office, VUW

Dr William Eulatth - Doctoral Development Coordinator, FGR, VUW. He has work experience across four continents, and a passion for helping students build confidence in their ability to achieve both academically and socially. His doctoral research explored success at university from the perspective of international students in one university in New Zealand. His most recent publication is “Student Engagement in Flexible and Distance Learning in New Zealand”, a chapter in Education Studies in Aotearoa: Key Disciplines and Emerging Directions (2019).
