(FGR) Dealing with different types of research students In-Person / Online

Research students come in diverse forms, each embodying a unique approach and perspective towards the pursuit of knowledge. This diversity not only enhances the collective learning environment but also fosters a vibrant exchange of ideas, creating a dynamic and collaborative community within the realm of academic exploration.


This is a session available for academic staff to help encourage quality supervision of research students:

  • Objective: To provide an overview of different types of students and good practices when it comes to supporting them

This discussion session comprises a brief presentation followed by a group discussion. Topics include:

  • Types of research students
  • The use coaching and mentoring in doctoral supervision: Why coaching and mentoring matters; Skills that make you a good coach and mentor; Coaching and mentoring strategies for supporting different types of students

Facilitator: Prof. Simon Davy 

Simon is Professor of Marine Biology in the School of Biological Sciences, bringing a wealth of expertise to both research and teaching within the field. His dedication to research is paralleled by his commitment to nurturing the next generation of scholars. In his role as a research supervisor, Simon has been instrumental in shaping the academic journey of numerous aspiring scholars. His guidance and mentorship have proven instrumental in equipping these students with the skills and knowledge essential for success in their academic pursuits. Additionally, he serves as a Chairperson for oral exams, a role in which he facilitates the formal examination process representing the culmination of a student's dedicated years of study toward their doctorate
