(FGR) How to help your students write In-Person / Online

In research, writing is crucial for students to express their ideas and earn academic degrees. Despite its significance, crafting scholarly documents can cause anxiety due to the complex nature of research writing and academic pressures. To address this, it's vital to offer research students support and encouragement. Confidence-building as writers necessitates a nurturing environment fostering skill development, constructive feedback, and a sense of accomplishment in their scholarly journey.


This is a s session available for academic staff to help encourage quality supervision of research students.

  • Objective: To reflect on how best to support students to produce high quality writing

The session comprises a brief presentation followed by a group discussion. Topics covered include:

  1. Challenges in scholarly writing
  2. Pedagogical practices to support academic writing
  • Negotiating roles and responsibilities
  • Tips to boost your students’ writing productivity
  • Feedback across cultures: Supporting different thesis writers
  1. Effective feedback on students writing
  • Components of effective feedback on student writing
  • Types of feedback: Lower vs Higher order concerns
  1. A plan for writing deadlines: Early, middle, and final months

Facilitators:

  • Prof. Averil Coxhead is Professor in Applied Linguistics in the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies. She supervises postgraduate research in a range of areas. Averil is an Associate Editor of the Journal of English for Specific Purposes. She has taught in different countries,  and her current research includes specialised and academic vocabulary in the trades, at university and secondary school. One element of Averil's research involves developing and evaluating word lists.
  • Dr Deborah Laurs – Assistant Manager, Student Learning. Deborah has taught English literature and creative and academic writing, and her current interests centre on the genre of thesis-writing, including co-authoring “Developing Generic Support for Doctoral Students” (Routledge, 2014) and “Developing Research Writing: A Handbook for Supervisors and Advisors” (Routledge, 2017). She and her fellow learning advisers are available to work one-on-one with students at all stages of the doctoral research journey.
