(FGR) How to manage conflict in research supervision In-Person / Online

A robust relationship fosters an environment where concerns can be openly addressed without the fear of criticism, paving the way for effective collaboration. Conflict is a natural part of any professional relationship, but its impact on your experience and productivity can be managed. This involves thoughtful consideration of how to address and resolve conflicts, ensuring that the research journey remains focused, constructive, and ultimately successful.


This is a session available for academic staff to help encourage quality supervision of research students.

  • ObjectiveTo reflect on challenges in research supervision and provide guidance and support in dealing with problems that may occur in the supervisory relationship

The session comprises a brief presentation followed by a group discussion. Topics covered include:

  • Types and sources of conflicts
  • Reducing and preventing conflict
  • What is conflict resolution
  • Factors to consider when facing a conflict
  • How to respond to conflict (healthy VS unhealthy ways of managing conflict)
  • Resolving issues: Procedures

Lisa is Professor of Taxation in the School of Accounting and Commercial Law, bringing a wealth of expertise to both research and teaching within the field. Her dedication to research is paralleled by her commitment to nurturing the next generation of scholars. In her role as a research supervisor, Lisa has been instrumental in shaping the academic journey of numerous aspiring scholars. Her guidance and mentorship have proven instrumental in equipping these students with the skills and knowledge essential for success in their academic pursuits. Additionally, she serves as a Chairperson for oral exams, a role in which she facilitates the formal examination process representing the culmination of a student's dedicated years of study toward their doctorate
