(FGR) Effective supervision meetings and monitoring student progress In-Person / Online

A session available for academic staff to help encourage quality supervision of research students.

Objective: To provide guidance on securing a good monitoring system of the progress students make in their PhD

Supervision meetings play an indispensable role in the PhD journey, providing crucial guidance, feedback, and support for the successful completion of research and academic milestones.


The session comprises a brief presentation followed by a group discussion. Topics covered include:

  1. Effective meeting practices
  • Frequency, length, responsibilities
  • What to do “before”, “during”, and “after” a meeting
  • The meeting agenda
  • How to get more involvement
  1. Reporting as an opportunity to reflect on progress/needs and develop plans for improvement

  • Lisa is Professor of Taxation in the School of Accounting and Commercial Law, bringing a wealth of expertise to both research and teaching within the field. Her dedication to research is paralleled by her commitment to nurturing the next generation of scholars. In her role as a research supervisor, Lisa has been instrumental in shaping the academic journey of numerous aspiring scholars. Her guidance and mentorship have proven instrumental in equipping these students with the skills and knowledge essential for success in their academic pursuits. Additionally, she serves as a Chairperson for oral exams, a role in which she facilitates the formal examination process representing the culmination of a student's dedicated years of study toward their doctorate.
  • Neil is is Professor of Computer Graphics in the Wellington Faculty of Engineering and Dean of the Wellington Faculty of Graduate Research. With a wealth of experience in teaching, conducting research, and supervising research students, Neil's influence extends across various facets of academia. His expertise is complemented by a vast repertoire in presenting, showcasing a knack for effectively communicating complex ideas to diverse audiences. Neil's multifaceted contributions make him a respected leader and mentor in the academic community.
