(FGR) Supporting your students in their Professional Development In-Person / Online

A session available for academic staff to help encourage quality supervision of research students.

Objective:

  • To provide practical insight and understanding of some skills doctoral students are expected to develop during their PhD
  • To stimulate supervisors’ ability to provide opportunities for professional development and guide their students to prepare themselves for the current job market

The session comprises a brief presentation followed by a group discussion. Topics covered include:

  • Overview of the discussion concerning the needs of students enrolled in doctoral programmes
  • Overview of frameworks that state key skills students are expected to develop: Join Skills Statement (The UK Research Councils), the Researcher Development Statement (Vitae), others
  • Some strategies to provide professional development
