Influencing Policy: Turning Research into Impact
Join us for a practical and insightful session on engaging with the public sector and influencing policy in Aotearoa New Zealand. Led by Andrew Jackson—Program Manager  of our Policy Hub and a seasoned public policy expert with over 30 years’ experience—this workshop is designed specifically for researchers who want to make a real-world impact.

Andrew will demystify how policy is developed, how to work effectively with officials, and how to present research in ways that resonate with decision-makers. You’ll gain both a strategic overview and hands-on guidance.

What the session will cover:

  • How government works: A plain-language overview of the public sector and how the parts fit together
  • Inside the machine: Understanding the context, constraints, and drivers of policy—including the roles of Ministers and officials
  • Thinking like a policy advisor: How to frame problems and solutions, and what kinds of evidence policy officials actually need
  • Making your research matter: Practical tips on communicating your work for maximum impact—clear, compelling, and actionable

This session is ideal for researchers at any stage who want their work to inform real change.
